Hello From Houston, TX
Community Foundation of Northern Colorado

Hello from Houston!

As the Houston Astros return home for the World Series this weekend, the television images might lead you to believe you that all is back to “normal.” I’m here on the ground, and can attest to the fact that two months after the hurricane hit, there is still a lot of work to be done. Approximately 130,000 homes sustained damage, roughly the number of households in all of Larimer County!

Though the disaster relief phase has all but ended, the intermediate and long-term needs are becoming more evident.  And this is where Colorado’s Hurricane Recovery Fund will enter the game.

Bohemian Foundation and Community Foundation of Northern Colorado have teamed up to create Colorado’s Hurricane Recovery Fund, and through the end of the month, Bohemian will match all donations made by residents of Colorado up to $3 million.

Northern Colorado residents are finding creative ways to raise funds and step up to the plate. Here are three examples:

  • The Kruse Elementary School student council came up with the idea to collect change, and each classroom contributed. The Bank of Colorado was gracious to count their coins and make out the cashier’s check they delivered to the Community Foundation.
  • Research scientists from Colorado State University’s Department of Ecosystem Science partnered with Soul Roots Yoga Studio and Rainbow Café for “Hatha for Harvey,” to raise funds for long-term recovery efforts in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey. The groups were motivated by a new generation of science, which aims to have real-world impact while being informed by and responding to current events.
  • The 200 partners of The Group, Inc. Real Estate know that when they work together, everyone benefits.  They were moved that families’ homes were devastated by the hurricanes and realized thousands of people would need long-term recovery help. Through their charitable arm, GroupGives, they donated from their paychecks and held fundraising events, raising over $20,000!

It’s rally time as Bohemian Foundation’s offer to match $3M in donations ends November 1! Thank you to the approximately 900 Colorado residents and businesses who have already donated, but there is still much more work to be accomplished. Please consider supporting the fund campaign efforts by forwarding this email to friends or sharing the video on social media.
