What is a community foundation?

A community foundation is an independent philanthropic organization working in a specific geographic area to manage a collection of endowed funds from many donors in the community. There are more than 700 community foundations nationwide, many of which date back to the early 1900s. Collectively, community foundations manage more than $40 billion in charitable assets. The Community Foundation of Northern Colorado meets National Standards for operational quality, donor service and accountability in the community foundation sector. This accreditation provides our donors with peace of mind and the knowledge that funds are managed in compliance with established best practices and the highest standards for community philanthropy.

What do we offer?

The Community Foundation of Northern Colorado is a nonprofit organization that manages and administers more than 400 charitable funds and approximately $95 million in assets. Donations to the funds are tax-deductible and grants from the funds are distributed to 501(c)(3) agencies.

Since 1975, the Community Foundation has proudly served our region by promoting local philanthropy. We are the regional leader in building a more engaged, philanthropic and visionary community by strategically connecting people with the causes they care about most. And through our annual grant and program distributions, we play a key role in enhancing the extraordinary quality of life the Northern Colorado region offers its residents.

In partnership with generous donors and dedicated volunteers, the Foundation is working to ensure a bright future for Northern Colorado. The Foundation’s Board of Trustees, Regional Development Council, and numerous committees have united the four primary communities we serve (Fort Collins, LovelandEstes Park and Berthoud) with a common purpose. In addition, the Community Foundation is a respected convener and facilitator for important community issues such as UniverCity Connections and Homeward 2020.

We are a vehicle for charitable giving. When you make your tax-deductible gift to the Community Foundation, you directly impact the charitable organizations or projects of your choice. By pooling charitable funds for greater investment return, we keep overhead expenses low and ensure that 98-100% percent of each contribution reaches the recipient nonprofit organization. This allows donors to do more with what they have to give.
